memorial day services held in sumpter during the memorial day flea market in sumpter oregon

Welcome to Sumpter Oregon!

Sumpter is a small, sleepy, historic gold mining town that was born amid
the rush for gold in Eastern Oregon which began in this area in 1861.
click to see more photos of the sumpter valley gold dredge Gold was discovered in the Sumpter area
in 1862 read more.........

We now have less than 200 year-round residents
in Sumpter and to look around here now.......
it's kind of hard to imagine that Sumpter was once
a thriving, hard working gold mining town
with a population of well over 5000 people!
(of course......thats not counting Chinese,
Women, or the Children.........!
)

The July 4th Flea Market is just around the corner and now it's time to play.....................
The Sumpter Valley Dredge is open, the historic Steam Train is running
The Sumpter Museums are open and so time to come play in Sumpter!
You can tour the Dredge, and follow the surrounding trails, which offer different views of the Dredge and nice walks throughout the State Park.
You can take a self-guided tour of the Sumpter Valley Dredge or
find a friendly OPRD Ranger to show you around. click the picture to see more photos of the MonighanAugust 2008.........
Cracker Creek Museum Members, Volunteers and their equipment dragged the Monighan down to it's
final home at the museum in Sumpter.
It was originally planned to fix up the old beast so it could walk down from it's last resting place under it's own power, but it didn't work out that way.....
So, the Monighan is now on display down at the
Cracker Creek Museum of Mining. If you want to see some gold mining history
click the picture to visit the Dredge Superintendents House up close and personal, then stop in at this unique outdoor museum in Sumpter! But wait there's more....
For more things to see, visit our Museums Page

in the Winter-it's awesome! If you're thinking about camping at the lake this summer,
be sure to visit Union Creek Campgrounds website today......
