Sumpter is a historic gold mining town that was born amid the rush for gold in Eastern Oregon which began in this area in 1861. Gold was discovered in Sumpter in 1862... Legend says that the U.S. Postmaster ordered the spelling changed because of the Civil War Reference to the real Ft. Sumter. Another version says our founding father simply forgot to add a "p" in the name, and just left it as is...... read more We now have 205 year-round residents in Sumpter, so it's kind of hard to imagine that Sumpter was once a thriving, hard working gold mining town with a population of 5000 people....thats not counting Chinese, Women, or Children!
