We are tucked away in the Wallowa Whitman Forest, in the beautiful Elkhorn Mountains, about 30 miles Southwest of Baker City and about 10 miles from Phillips Lake. We have only one gas station, two small general stores and one atm at the Gold Post. During the Flea Markets, we encourage you to bring plenty of cash as the atm experiences lots of business and tends to run out often. No matter what the season - you should always be prepared for any type of weather! The flea market is spread throughout town, so be prepared to do some walking as you shop - flip flops don't work well in the gravel! There is a free shuttle bus provided by Community Connections of Baker City. You can get cell phone coverage up here in the mountains now, thanks to the new Verizon tower that was installed last year. You can check your emails and surf the internet down at the Sumpter Library daily from 11 am - 3 pm and 4 pm - 7 pm on Wednesdays. We welcome your canine friends in Sumpter....but they are required to be on a leash at all times while in Sumpter. The speed limit in Sumpter is 15 mph. Yes, you are allowed to ride your ATV's and Snowmobiles on our streets. But, you cannot ride on the State Highway (Mill St.) It's a State law and enforced by the Sherriff. Our city streets offer access to the trail systems that surround Sumpter. But they are still City streets! You may notice the lack of speed limit signs around town, but that does not mean that you get to make up your own! For the would-be gold miners coming to town....you should know that those "piles of rock" you see in the valley are mostly privately owned, so please be respectful of their property. You can take free gold panning lessons at the Sumpter Valley Dredge on weekends, courtesy of the State Park Rangers, and gold panning is allowed at designated sites within the park. You will need a prospecting permit, available from the State Park Rangers. The permits are free and good for that day only. For more information, visit Friends of The Dredge. Due to the historical nature of the State Park, Metal Detectors are not allowed. For you snow lovers out there............Sumpter is always open! The State keeps us plowed on a daily basis during the winter. You can ride your snowmobile anywhere in town, except the state highway. Winter means The Poker Run in February. Need more information about Sumpter Events? www.sumpterchamber.com The Sumpter Flea Market occurs three times a year and is one of the largest Flea Markets in the Nortwest! The Oregon State Park is home to both the Gold Dredge and the Sumpter Valley Railroad Depot in Sumpter. The Day Use area is a great place to park for the day. The Park is closed from Oct 31 - May 1st, but snow enthusiasts can enjoy the park all winter! Snowmobiles and Snowshoes are great ways to enjoy the State Heritage Area....Snowboards are great too! See you in Sumpter! ![]() |
