The Sumpter Cemetery

The Sumpter Cemetery has been around since the late 1800's. Our cemetery is a bit smaller than most and lies in a quiet and peaceful place in the forest, just outside of the City limits. In 2010, a group of local residents, the Sumpter Volunteer Fire Department and Boy Scout Troup 433 of Baker City, came together to cleanup the cemetery. The volunteer group, organized by Joy Myers, received a grant from the Oregon Heritage Commission-Historic Cemetaries Section. Volunteers were able to clear about 1/3 of trees and debris from the cemetery in 2010. There will be no more burials in the historic section of the cemetery, and until cleanup is complete and plotting can be done, there will be no burials in the current section either. There will be organized working parties throughout the summer, beginning after the Memorial Day Fleamarket.

If you would like to join the working parties, or would like more information,
