Grand Opening |
![]() The Sumpter Library was a vision first shared by SVMA President and Museum Director, Stephen F. Rich, and library director, (now retired) Aletha Bonebrake. Perry Stokes, the current
Baker County Public Library Director, kept the dream of a library in Sumpter alive. Gary Dielman, who is the Baker Library District President ~ as well as, local Historian and Photo Archivist, believes Sumpter had a library at one time ~ based on a 1905 Directory, but he believes there is little evidence still in existence........If you have information regarding the first library in Sumpter, contact the Library at: 894-2253. The Library shares space with the Sumpter Museum, which is operated by the Sumpter Valley Museum Association, which means......whenever the library is open, so is the Museum! And don't forget.....IT'S ALWAYS FREE! Library Journal, a national magazine, recently announced that Baker County
Library District has won one of the top finalist prizes for Best Small Library in America 2010. The grand prize went to Glen Carbon Centennial Library, IL. Baker County Library shares its finalist prize with the Cross Plains Public Library, TX. making it one of the top 3 libraries in the country. The Library Journal press release states these “libraries feature the programs, tech savvy, and commitment to the community that signifies the Best Small Library in America.” Over 30 libraries competed for the award this year. Baker County Library’s nomination came from Ted Kulongoski, Oregon Governor, with letters of endorsement furnished by State Librarian Jim Scheppke, Baker County Commissioner Fred Warner, and Ken Reading, Director of the Umatilla Special Library District. Library Director, Perry Stokes, says........... ”This is an amazing honor that reflects the collective work and sponsorship of the community. It was primarily made possible by support from the great citizens of Baker County and partnerships throughout Eastern Oregon. It also directly reflects the brilliant and hard work by retired Director Aletha Bonebrake, our wonderful library board and staff, and the advocacy of State Librarian Jim Scheppke. Congratulations and enormous thanks to all. It is such a privilege and a pleasure to be working here with and for you!” Sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Library Journal's Best Small Library in America award was created in 2005 to encourage and showcase the exemplary work of libraries serving populations under 25,000. As the winner, Glen Carbon Centennial Library will receive a $15,000 cash award to support its services and outreach to the community. The two finalist libraries will each receive conference costs for two library representatives to attend the 2010 Public Library Association conference in Portland, Oregon and recognition at an award celebration. Stokes will accept the finalist award on Thursday, March 25 at a PLA gala event in Portland. The full article about the award can be viewed on the Library Journal website www.libraryjournal.com The Sumpter Library depends on volunteers to keep the doors open.

but the space had to be prepared prior to the library being installed. The BYCAP Crew, of Baker City, supervised by Ben Titus, with the direction of Stephen F. Rich, our Museum director, worked hard to get the space ready. Original brick walls had to be cleaned and sealed by hand, original door frames and windows had to fixed and painted. Randy and Linda Joseph, of Joseph Millworks, donated materials and millwork very much appreciated by the library and Rich, who made the molding work look so good! And thanks to Al Clarke for working on the kitchen area, and thanks to Kurt Clarke for building the wheelchair ramp at the back of the the building.....Come in and see the beautiful work for yourself!
