The Sumpter Valley Railroad first steamed into the Sumpter Valley back in 1896 bringing with it civilization and growth for a Gold Mining Boom Town. Although originally, the Sumpter Valley Railroad was on the hunt for Oregon Timber from the surrounding mountains, it didn't take long for the railroad to begin supporting this small town in the throws of a booming gold rush. Mr. Eccles built a strong steam railroad that survived when other side rail lines in the great Northwest were being gobbled up by the nation's railroad tycoons........
The Historic Steam Train still rumbles through the Sumpter Valley every summer thanks to a group of volunteers who travel from points all over the West to Sumpter to keep the steam train running!
